Education


First level studies at the University of Niš are organized as:

 - Basic academic studies
 - Basic professional sudies

Basic studies at the University of Niš faculties are three or four years in duration.
Basic academic studies cover from 180 to 240 ESPB points.
Basic professional studies cover 180 ESPB points.

As the number of applicants for Univeristy of Niš faculties is usually higher than the official quota of available places, all faculties have selective admission policy based on open Call for Admissions procedure, officially announced in May each year.

A candidate can enroll in the first level studies only under criteria and procedures defined by Regulations on Student Admission to the University of Niš Study Programme ("University of Niš Gazette, number 6/07"), General Faculty Act and Study Programmes Call for Admissions.

A candidate, who has completed the secondary education in duration of four years in gymnasium or relevant high or art school, has the right to enroll in the first year of basic academic or professional studies organized by the University/Faculty.

Ranking of candidates enrolling for the first year of basic studies is determined by the overall secondary school marks, points scored at the entrance exam, or skill and ability assessment exam.

In reference to the points generated on basis of candidates’ secondary school marks and enrolment test score, a Faculty determines an integral rank list.
Enrolment of candidates is scheduled for the end of June. Faculties that fail to fill the determined quota are also enrolling students in September enrolment term.


Second level studies at the University of Niš are organized as:

 - Master's academic studies
 - Specialist professional sudies
 - Specialist academic studies

Master's academic studies bring at least 60 ESPB points in cases when the previously accomplished scope of basic academic studies is covering 240 ESPB points, or at least 120 ESPB points in cases when the previously accomplished scope of basic academic studies is covering 180 ESPB.                                                                          
Specialist professional studies bring at least 60 ESPB points.
Specialist academic studies bring at least 60 ESPB points, on condition that graduate academic studies have been completed.

A candidate can enroll in the second level studies only under criteria and procedures defined by Regulations on Student Admission to the University of Niš Study Programme (>>University of Niš Gazette, number 6/07<<), General Faculty Act and Study Programmes Call for Admissions.

A candidate can enrol in the first year of the Master's academic studies, only after completion of the relevant basic academic studies determined by the study programme and having previously scored:

 - At least 180 ESPB points–in cases when Master's academic studies are covering 120 ESPB points.
 - At least 240 ESPB points – in cases when Master's academic studies are covering 60 ESPB points.

Ranking of candidates enrolling for the first year of Master's academic studies is determined on basis of the basic studies overall average mark and duration of studying during the basic studies.

Enrolment in the Master's academic studies can be conditioned by the successful passing of the entrance exam or skill and ability assessment exam.

A candidate can enrol in the first year of the specialist academic studies, only after completion of the relevant Master's academic studies determined by the study programme, having previously scored at least 300 ESPB points; A candidate can also enrol in the first year of the specialist academic studies after completion of the basic academic studies, having previously scored at least 240 ESPB, in which case the studies last at least 2 years covering no less than 120 ESPB points.

Ranking of candidates enrolling for the first year of the specialist academic studies is determined on basis of the basic and Master’s studies overall average marks  and duration of studying during the previous studies.

Enrolment in the specialist academic studies can be conditioned by the successful passing of the entrance exam or skill and ability assessment exam.
A candidate can enrol in the first year of the specialist professional studies, only after completion of the relevant basic professional or basic academic studies determined by the study programme, having previously scored at least 180 ESPB points.

Ranking of candidates enrolling for the first year of the specialist professional studies is determined on basis of the basic and Master’s studies overall average marks and duration of studying during the previous studies.


University of Niš offers third level studies- Doctoral academic studies.

Doctoral academic studies bring at least 180 ESPB points in cases when the previously accomplished scope of studies is covering no less than 300 ESPB points generated on both basic academic and Master’s academic studies.

A candidate can enroll in the third level studies only under criteria and procedures defined by Regulations on Student Admission to the University of Niš Study Programme ("University of Niš Gazette, number 6/07"), General Faculty Act and Study Programmes Call for Admissions.
A candidate can enroll in the first year of the Doctoral academic studies only after completion of:

 1. VII-1 level of professional qualification studies with the average mark not lower than 8,00.
 2. Master’s academic studies covering at least 300 ESPB points in total and overall average mark not lower than 8,00 at the basic academic and Master’s academic studies.

The study programme of the Doctoral academic studies can be structured to recognize and approve a part of the study programme pertaining to the Specialist academic studies or Master’s academic studies, completed in the past under different rules and regulations, in order to accept it as a part of the study programme of the Doctoral academic studies.

Ranking of candidates enrolling for the first year of the Doctoral professional studies is determined on basis of the basic and Master’s studies overall average marks, duration of studying during the basic and Master’s studies, and accomplished results of academic research.

Enrolment in the Doctoral academic studies can be conditioned by the successful passing of the entrance exam or skill and ability assessment exam.

A student of Master’s studies, enrolled under the rules and regulations that had been valid before a Law on Higher Education became effective, has the right during his/her studies to enrol in the  study programme of the Doctoral academic studies, within the same or related area of study.

A candidate, having an academic title Master of Science or Master of Arts, has the right to enrol in the corresponding year of  the Doctoral studies, within the same or related area of study.

Multidisciplinary study programs include subjects from two or more areas of the same or different scientific fields. These study programs may be organized within all the three study levels and both types of higher education - academic and professional studies.

It is determined which standards each multidisciplinary study program has to meet with respect to personnel, material, spatial and other resources, and it can be realized only if accredited. Based on the defined standards, the number of students can be determined for the enrollment in these study programs.

Each multidisciplinary study program provides acquiring of specific professional, academic or scientific title.

Faculties are offering enrolment of candidates, not having a student status, in lifelong learning programmes outside the study programme curriculum, professional development and distance learning programmes, in accordance with the General Faculty Act of the Educational Academic Board.



Research

Research work is performed at all faculties of the University of Niš, in the aress  of basic, applied and development scientific research. Research supports development of science and creativity, improves higher education activities, improves the teaching process, improvement of young scientists, introducing  students to the academic work, as well as providing the resources for work  and development of the university as a whole.

Research work in the previous period has been carried out though participation of teachers and associates in realisation of national and internatioinal  research projects, publishing papers in academic journals and attending academic seminars in the country and abroad. Activities financed by Serbian Ministry of Science represent the basic form  of research work at the faculties, and considerable funding resource.

Great  number of faculty teachers and associates have been participating in projects  of this kind.  Many University of Niš faculties are, within their own organisational units, research labs and innovation centers, providing professional and technical support as well as other scientific research related services, which has established  cooperation with the economy sector.

All University facutlies have organized or coorganized hundreds of academic  seminars on national level with international participation. The growing number of teachers and professional associates from all University of Niš faculties  has been actively participating in numerous academis seminars on national  and international level.

The Center was established in 1990 as a scientific unit of the University of Nis, in order to improve the scientific cooperation between the Academy and the University.  The themes of the research are specific problems of the importance for the south-eastern Serbia, in the fields of natural, medical, technical and technological sciences, and humanities. All the work is done through projects, both theoretical and field researches, organizing local and international scientific conferences, publishing activities and promoting the scientific results.
The Center is divided into sections, according to the subjects of research:

- Archeology and History of Art
- Biomedicine
- History
- Informatics
- Serbian language
- Energetics
- Literature
- Civil Engineering and Architecture
- Ethnology
- Sociology and Economy
- Materials and Components

In cooperation with its counterpart institutes and faculties, The Center is currently working on archeological research of the area surrounding the Nisava river, area dialects, history of literature, culture and esthetics, endemic nephropathy, solar energy, and students’ risky sexual behavior.
So far the Center has published 26 books and conference proceedings. The project associates
have published a great number of articles in local and international journal.



Publishing


Publishing activity of the University of Niš has four decades long tradition. These activities began in 1970 when the first three textbooks, authored by Niš University professors, were published. Today, the Niš University Publishing Unit has rich and diverse production in both printed and electronic forms. The  Publishing Unit independently prepares for publishing and issues books and magazines, monographs and studies, The Scientific Journal "Facta Universitatis", The Journal for Social Theory and Practice "Teme", "Current University Curricula" and "University of Niš Herald" as occasional university publications,  CDs, audio and video publications.

Textbooks, workbooks, manuals, monographs,  collected papers, proceedings and informative  booklets have been published at the University of Niš since 1970, and up to now there has been over 170 publications of this  kind. Since 2002, two libraries have been formed: ACADEMIA – (textbooks,  workbooks and manuals) and SCIENTIA – (monographs). Along with the publishing in print, journals and other publications are also published in the electronic form. "Facta Universitatis", "Teme", as well as all other University publications have been having their on-line versions for ten years already.

The Scientific Journal "Facta Universitatis" is an international journal which has  been published in English since 1986. The journal has, over the two and a half  decade of its publishing, gained recognition and distinguished status in national  and international academic circles, to which also contributes the cooperation with eminent scientists from Serbia and abroad. Numerous renowned scientists and  academicians publish their works in the journal, participate in the editorial boards  or review papers of other authors. Papers published in the journal series have been  regularly referred to in the great number of leading journal citation reports. Program orientation of the journal is: keeping track of the latest scientific achievements, stimulation of creative thought in function of science and scientific research development of teachers and associates of the University of Niš, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary networking in scientific research projects  realization and informing the public on the development and achievements of  the scientific research and professional work at the University of Niš. The Scientifi c Journal "Facta Universitatis" has been published in 14 separate  series, in respect to corresponding scientific areas, covering all the major fields  of study taught at the University of Niš. "Facta Universitatis" series are:

"Facta Universitatis" series are published one to three  times per year, and are being delivered to more than  1100 addresses worldwide. In this way, a rich publication  exchange is achieved, to the benefit of the University Library "Nikola Tesla".

The Journal for Social Theory and Practice "Teme" has been published since 1977, fi rst under the name "Marxist Papers", and since 1989 under the current title. The journal "Teme" is quarterly published, featuring scientifi c papers from our country, as well as from all former Yugoslav countries and, over the past years, there has been a growing number of international contributions. The journal is published in the Serbian language, with an abstract in English.
